The A’s are finalizing a trade to acquire left-hander Jeffrey Springs from the Tampa Bay Rays, multiple media outlets reported Saturday.
Per the Tampa Bay Times, the Rays also will receive an additional unidentified player in the deal in exchange for right-hander Joe Boyle, first baseman/outfielder Will Simpson, minor-league right-hander Jacob Watters and a competitive balance round draft pick.
The A’s, who will play in Sacramento for the next three seasons before a planned move to Las Vegas, added to their pitching staff earlier this month when they reached agreement on a three-year, $67 million contract with right-hander Luis Severino.
Springs, 32, posted a 2-2 record with a 3.27 ERA in seven games (all starts) last season. He was placed on injured reserve with left elbow fatigue on Sept. 8 and did not pitch in another game.
Springs is 23-12 with a 3.39 ERA in 145 career appearances (37 starts) with the Texas Rangers (2018-19), Boston Red Sox (2020) and Rays.
Boyle, 25, was 3-6 with a 6.42 ERA in 13 games (10 starts) last season with the Athletics. He is 5-6 with a 5.23 ERA in 16 career games (13 starts) with the A’s.
Simpson, 23, has yet to make his major-league debut. He spent this past season with Double-A Midland and High-A Lansing, batting a combined .282 with 18 homers and 90 RBIs in 127 games.
Watters, 23, posted a 7-3 record with a 5.23 ERA in 18 games (10 starts) split between Lansing and Triple-A Las Vegas.
