Cincinnati Reds left-hander Brent Suter was placed on the 15-day injured list on Saturday after an MRI exam revealed a partial tear of the left teres major muscle in back of his throwing shoulder.

Suter will be unable to throw for four to six weeks to allow the tear to heal. He said he hopes to return to the team before the end of the season.

Suter exited Friday’s game in the fifth inning with soreness in the shoulder. He said he woke up with pain in the shoulder on Saturday. He underwent testing prior to the Saturday night game against the host Washington Nationals.

“The first hour of hearing the news, I was really beat up about it, really emotional,” Suter told reporters. “Everyone was coming out to me and giving me a lot of love, which meant a lot. I’m going to try to get back to the active team as quick as I can.”

Suter, 34, is 0-0 with a 3.68 ERA in 38 appearances this season. He is in his first season with the Reds after spending his first seven seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers and last season with the Colorado Rockies.

Cincinnati recalled right-hander Casey Legumina from Triple-A Louisville in a corresponding move.

Legumina, 27, pitched in one major league game for the Reds earlier this season and allowed three runs (two earned) in two innings. He is 1-0 with a 6.14 ERA in 12 appearances over the past two seasons.
