Bruce Bochy realizes his club is facing an enormous challenge. However, the San Francisco manager remains confident the Giants can reverse their fortunes and play their way into the postseason.

For the ninth time this season, the Giants took a lead into the ninth inning and lost.

The San Francisco Giants failed to solidify their postseason chances in a series split with the St. Louis Cardinals this weekend, but have an opportunity to gain ground in both the Wild Card and the NL West division race starting tonight, in game one of a three game set with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

As the Giants, five games back of the Dodgers in the West, 13 to play, arrive at Dodger Stadium tonight, the angel on the shoulder says: “Play it out! Let’s see what happens after 162! Let’s all stand back and enjoy Marty Lurie’s mosaic!”

National treasure Vin Scully is finishing up his last year in the broadcast booth with the Dodgers. To honor his legendary career, both KNBR and CSN Bay Area will pick up Scully’s call for the 3rd inning of the game between the Giants and Dodgers on Oct. 2, the last game of the regular season for both teams.

It will be the 10th regular-season matchup between Kershaw and Bumgarner, who made their major league debuts 15 1/2 months apart in 2008 and 2009. Kershaw has gone 3-4 with a 2.18 ERA and Bumgarner is 4-3 with a 2.88 ERA in those games.

The Giants now head to Los Angeles for a huge series with the NL West-leading Dodgers.

The Giants dropped the second game in a row against St. Louis on Sunday afternoon. In doing so, the Cardinals now hold the better head-to-head record on the year (4-3), and hold the tiebreaker against the Giants should a wild-card tiebreaker scenario arise.

On the hottest day of the year at AT&T Park, the Giants offense was cold as ice.

Saturday’s starter had a good day on the hill, only allowing five hits and one run in 6.2 innings of work.
