By now you’ve heard every take under the sun when it comes to DeVondre Campbell’s cowardly exit from a forgettable 49ers tenure that didn’t even last a full season. The outrage on Friday morning at least partially overshadowed the latest chapter of a hellish 2024 49ers campaign. Tim Ryan weighed in on Monday morning after initially declining to publicly share his thoughts on Campbell. The Niners’ radio color analyst joined Murph and Markus and was asked about the situation.
“See ya, wouldn’t wanna be ya,” Ryan remarked quickly. “He crossed the line man. I’m angry for these players and coaches who work so hard every day. And this cat decided he didn’t even wanna play.”
Campbell was mauled by teammates postgame as well. Both George Kittle and Charvarius Ward chastised the now suspended Niner immediately following the loss.
Make no mistake, it’s over for the 2024 49ers. All but mathematically eliminated from a weak NFC West, the Niners now turn their attention to an offseason that will be chock full of questions. What makes this doomed from the start campaign even more painful is the brazed mediocrity of the division. No team seems keen on winning it, as an early Cardinals push has faded fast and a November Seahawks run took a step back Sunday. The “surging” Rams now look like the favorites. Those Rams started 1-4, with the one win a week three fourth quarter miracle comeback against the 49ers. Each division foe has notched an improbable win over the NIners that breathed at least momentary life into its season. Hard to fathom just how much has gone wrong for these Niners.
When Deebo Samuel pulled out the tried and true “I want the ball more” cry for attention during the week, many thought it would lead, justified or not, to a big game for the struggling former Pro Bowl receiver. His most positive teammates predicted a much ahead of a matchup with a Rams team Samuel has long bullied.
It seems as though an entire offseason of nauseating public contract negotiations has proven to be nostalgic for a number of Niners fans. Before the nightmare 2024 season has come to a close, fans and pundits alike have taken to turning up the heat on the subject of Brock Purdy’s looming contract negotiations. Buckle up fans, it’s going to be another long summer, hopefully anything but static.
