The trade deadline has passed, but that won’t stop Farhan Zaidi.
The Giants and A’s have swapped prospects, something that is allowed post-deadline because it involves players who are not on either team’s 40-man roster. In the deal, San Francisco has acquired infielder/outfielder Trenton Brooks in exchange for minor-league left-handed pitcher Sean Newcomb.
Brooks, 28, was originally drafted by Cleveland, but has spent all of 2023 with the A’s Triple-A affiliate in Las Vegas, and has mashed. He’s slashing .299/.405/.529 through 94 games with 16 home runs. Brooks has yet to make his major league debut and has toiled away in the minor leagues since 2014.
Brooks has versatility defensively, and can play the corner outfield positions and first base. Brooks has played all three this season, but primarily left field.
Newcomb, meanwhile has spent six seasons in the major leagues, and was signed by the Giants in 2023. A former top 100 prospect, Newcomb has thrown well between Single-A and Triple-A for SF this year in relief, posting a 3.15 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP.
It’s quite rare for the A’s and Giants to do business together. Amazingly, the teams have not made a major league trade since 1990.
