Farhan Zaidi says Giants actively looking to add infielder on KNBR

With less than two weeks to go until the trade deadline, the Giants are competitive.

It begs the question as to how aggressive the team will be on or before August 1 in trying to improve the roster.

No one has more insight into that very question than Farhan Zaidi, the team’s president of baseball operations. He joined Tolbert and Copes on Thursday with some insight into how the Giants and other MLB teams are thinking at this juncture.

Zaidi, with the Giants tied with the Diamondbacks for the top Wild Card spot — and both 1.5 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West — sounded like the team would be buyers, if anything.

“I think we can kick it up another gear,” Zaidi said. “We think we’re a playoff team right now and we’re certainly going to try to improve that. We don’t want to just get into the playoffs. We want to have a chance to go deep and have a really successful season.”

If there’s any position that sticks out as one the Giants would seek out, it’s middle infield. Thairo Estrada is still weeks away from a return from a hand fracture and Brandon Crawford is dealing with knee inflammation.

Zaidi acknowledged that he’d like to add a middle infielder.

“For us, we’ve talked about it some, we’d like to add some infield depth to with Craw going on the IL and Thairo still at least a couple of weeks away,” Zaidi said. “So that’s kind of maybe unrelated to the trade deadline, we’re just looking to add some infield depth and help our young guys who’ve been carrying a lot of the load that they are. But at least in the process of having a short-term need, you get a sense of how teams are approaching the deadline and there’s there’s still a lot of wait and see out there.”

San Francisco has been leaning on Brett Wisely (batting .189) and Casey Schmitt (batting .217) who have both been stellar defensively but struggled offensively.
