The Giants, who are 35-22 since May 1, one of the best records in MLB, will be represented at the All-Star Game in Seattle by just one player.
Closer Camilo Doval earned his first career All-Star selection, but he won’t be joined by any of his teammates. Doval, 25, is tied for the MLB lead with 24 saves.
Given Doval’s production as the Giants’ closer, he was an All-Star lock. The right-hander has a 1.89 ERA. Giants manager Gabe Kapler recently praised him for his development in the running game; he and Patrick Bailey combined to throw out Starling Marte in a key ninth inning moment over the weekend.
“There are no words to express how I feel, but I do feel very proud of being selected,” Doval told reporters in New York, via The Mercury News. “I think that’s a testament of my work. You’ll get your awards, your trophies later. As long as you work really hard, they will come.”
The fan voting round, which selects the All-Star starters, passed over all of the Giants. Then the reserves, picked by player voting and the commissioner’s office, didn’t recognize San Francisco’s LaMonte Wade Jr., J.D. Davis or Thairo Estrada — three well-deserving players.
Wade has been one of the most productive leadoff hitters in MLB, blending a rare combination of plate discipline and power; he leads the Giants in WAR with 2.8. Davis has a .817 OPS and ranks sixth among third baseman in DEF, Fangraphs’ catch-all defensive metric. And Estrada, despite a recent slump, is on pace to hit over 20 home runs and steal over 30 bags.
Starter Logan Webb, who has pitched the third-most innings in MLB, also got passed over. Webb ranks in the top-10 in strikeout to walk ratio, but has a 3.43 ERA.
The Atlanta Braves have the most All-Stars this year, with eight: Ronald Acuña Jr., Sean Murphy, Orlando Arcia, Matt Olson, Ozzie Albies, Austin Riley, Spencer Strider, and Bryce Elder.
Former Giants skipper Dusty Baker will manage the American League All-Star team, and the Phillies’ Rob Thomson will represent the National League.
