Free agency starts on Friday, and besides bringing back Draymond Green, the Warriors need to make another move or two to fill out their bench. Connor Letourneau of the San Francisco Chronicle joined Murph & Mac on Friday, and named a few players he thinks Golden State should take a look at.
“Terence Davis from Sacramento, I really like him,” Letourneau said on KNBR. “Very good defensive player, gave the Warriors some problems during the playoffs. I’m not sure they can get him on a minimum, but that’s someone that would be on my dream list if I’m the Warriors.”
Davis, 26, is a very good wing defender who played well at the end of the Kings-Warriors playoff series after he was entered back into the rotation. Davis played just 13 minutes per game last season, but shot 36 percent from 3.
“I like Dario Šarić, he’s a very skilled big,” Letourneau continued. “He hasn’t lived up to his billing as a former lottery pick. I think he’d fit well in the Warriors system. One guy that I love to see the Warriors sign is Juan Toscano-Anderson on a minimum. I thought he was a really good fit on the Warriors. Obviously a hometown guy, and I think he could provide value as a backend rotation guy for the Warriors. I think he would probably welcome that as someone who hasn’t found that same level of success on other teams since leaving the Warriors.”
Overall, Letourneau says that Warriors fans shouldn’t expect a big splash, considering they are strapped for cash and probably will have to dole out minimum contracts.
“Those are some names that come to mind,” Letourneau said. “I think a lot of the names out there aren’t super realistic. I know a lot of people are hoping Seth Curry, just because of the brother connection and stuff like that. He’s had that opportunity before and hasn’t taken it. I would be surprised if he did now.
“I think Warriors fans need to be realistic. These are minimum contracts, okay? You are not going to get guys who averaged 15 points per game last year. You’ll be getting guys who are coming off injuries or have fallen out of rotations elsewhere, and you’re going to be asking those guys to play bigger roles for you next season.”
The Warriors have done well finding solid bargain players in the past — Otto Porter Jr. and Donte DiVincenzo come to mind — but the process is a bit of a crapshoot.
“That’s why this is hard,” Letourneau concluded. “You need to find these bargain guys who are way better than they have proven in recent years.”
