The Giants have been the best team in baseball since May 1, a two-month stretch of elite play that the fans casting All-Star Game may not have recognized.
This year’s All-Star Game will include zero Giants in the starting lineup, a group of players determined by fan voting. The National League’s starters include three Dodgers and three Braves — representing teams in two of the biggest NL markets.
The Giants’ best position player candidates to start the All-Star Game were J.D. Davis, LaMonte Wade Jr. and Thairo Estrada. The players voted ahead of them were seven-time All-Star Nolan Arenado, former MVP Freddie Freeman and Luis Arraez, who’s been flirting with a .400 average all year.
Estrada is tied with Arraez in Fangraphs WAR with 2.7.
That trio, plus pitchers including Camilo Doval, Logan Webb and possibly Tyler Rogers, can still represent the Giants in Seattle as reserves. That selection of 23 players for each league will be chosen by the players and commissioner’s office.
The Rangers, former Giants manager Bruce Bochy’s club, have the most starters with four.
The Mets, Red Sox, Phillies, Astros, Padres, Blue Jays and Orioles — either big market teams or clubs with winning records — didn’t get a starter voted in.
