It’s time for our weekly check in on the 49ers quarterback situation, one that somehow keeps changing according to reports despite the fact that nothing has actually happened.

This offseason, there have been a myriad of reports and rumors that the 49ers are out on Trey Lance, that Sam Darnold was brought in to be the backup (or starter) and that Lance is on the trading block.

49ers beat writer Matt Maiocco doesn’t seem to believe any of that, and told Murph & Mac on Thursday that he believes SF is very high on the former No. 3 overall pick.

“I dispute the notion that the 49ers have soured on Trey Lance,” Maiocco said on KNBR. “I think personally, in my opinion, they like him now more than they ever had since they’ve had him with the 49ers, but they just don’t know how he will perform. Nobody knows how he’ll perform if given the opportunity.

“I think Darnold is in the same position. They like him a lot. There’s a lot of talent there. We’ve talked about how he can throw the football. They just don’t know about him either, how he’d perform if given the opportunity in this offense.”

Maiocco also believes that Brock Purdy will be the starter, even if he is still recovering and unable to play during the lead up to the season.

“I see the 49ers going into training camp with a pretty clear cut No. 1 quarterback, even though he might not play much if any in the preseason,” Maiocco said. “But I think their No. 1 is pretty clear cut, the No. 2 is I’d say equal footing and kind of a TBD.”
