Alright Mr. Dunleavy, you’re on the clock.
The Warriors’ new general manager’s first task will be a big one. Draymond Green opted out of his $27.6 million player option for next season according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski on Monday, meaning he will explore unrestricted free agency as the Warriors and Mike Dunleavy Jr. try to negotiate a new contract with the franchise cornerstone. Dunleavy Jr. just took over for former executive Bob Myers, who stepped down earlier this month.
Green’s decision to opt out is not a surprise, though there is reportedly mutual interest in him rejoining the Warriors. He is also expected to explore sign-and-trade opportunities with other teams.
Green had another solid season as an offensive playmaker and defensive stalwart for the Warriors, but his position as a leader was called into question after video surfaced of him punching Jordan Poole during training camp. Head coach Steve Kerr called the incident the biggest crisis the team has faced during his tenure, and an incident the team never recovered from.
Green, 33, will be entering the 12th year of his career. Last season he averaged 8.5 points on 52.7 percent shooting, 7.2 rebounds and 6.8 assists per game.
