In the middle of the fourth inning, both dugouts and bullpens emptied and flocked to the infield as tensions flared between the Giants and Cardinals.
LaMonte Wade Jr., the Giants’ first baseman, had to get restrained by teammates. He had just doubled off St. Louis Cardinals starter Jack Flaherty, who appeared to instigate things by shouting at Wade.
No ejections or penalties were immediately issued, though there was a brief on-field delay.
Reliever John Brebbia, who used to pitch for the Cardinals, sprinted to the commotion, according to the broadcast.
Earlier in the game, J.D. Davis and Mitch Haniger got injured on consecutive plays — both of which were incidental. Davis turned his ankle sliding into third base, and Haniger got hit with a Flaherty changeup. Flaherty has walked 5.2 batters per nine innings this year and almost certainly wasn’t trying to hit Haniger in a 2-2 game.
Both David Villar and Luis Matos, who has been dominating Triple-A pitching, got removed from their ongoing River Cats game in case the Giants will need to place Davis and Haniger on the injured list.
