Only an injury can cool off Michael Conforto right now.
Conforto hurt his left heel while legging out a single on Tuesday, and it appears to be bothering him enough before Wednesday’s game that he’s going in for X-rays and an MRI, according to reporters on scene.
Losing Conforto to the Injured List right now would not be ideal, but it could also lead to the call up of top prospect Luis Matos. The Giants are light on corner outfielders with Joc Pederson still on the IL, and Matos has been raking at both Double-A and Triple-A this season, with a combined slash line of .316/.395/.452.
A call up of Matos would continue the Giants’ youth movement that has sparked their hot streak. Matos, a native of Venezuela, was ranked as high as the 30th best prospect in baseball this offseason by Baseball Prospectus.
Matos will have a tough time matching Conforto’s production. The first-year Giant is on fire after a slow start. Since May 9, Conforto is slashing .368/.423/.706 and has launched seven home runs in his last 18 starts.
