The Warriors were eliminated from the Western Conference playoffs for the first time in Steve Kerr’s tenure. It begs myriad questions about the team’s future.
Stephen Curry is 35. Draymond Green and Klay Thompson are both 33. Bob Myers’ contract is up.
Green’s contract is the first roster domino to fall. He has a $27.59 million player option this offseason. He said after the Game 6 loss to the Lakers that he wants to be a Warrior “for life.”
He also said earlier this year that he wants to play four or five more seasons before retiring.
Oddsmakers seem him as staying with the Warriors are most likely scenario. Per Bookies.com, the Warriors are the odds-on favorites to retain Green:
Draymond Green 2023-2024 Team Odds
Golden State Warriors +200 (33.3%)
Los Angeles Lakers +300 (25%)
Detroit Pistons +450 (18.2%)
Houston Rockets +500 (16.7%)
Milwaukee Bucks +800 (11.1%)
The Field +550 (15.4%)
That checks out with a report from The Athletic’s Anthony Slater and Shams Charania who reported that the Warriors plan to, “… discuss a new multi-year contract with Green, either via an opt in and extend or an entirely new deal after an opt out.”
If the Warriors keep Green around, the core, sans Andre Iguodala, would have at least one more run at a championship together. Klay Thompson’s deal has one year and $43.22 million left.
