The Warriors aren’t done just yet.
For the third time in their dynastic, decade-long run, Golden State trails 3-1 in a series. Their 104-101 loss in Los Angeles puts them in a position that less than five percent of playoff teams have ever come back from.
Golden State, however, knows all about those 3-1 comebacks. They executed one against the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2016 and were dealt one by LeBron James’ Cleveland Cavaliers in the following series.
Can they pull off the improbable? 76ers broadcaster and KNBR alumnus Kate Scott thinks it’s possible. Scott joined Murph and Mac on Tuesday after the brutal loss and offered a bit of optimism.
“They can 100 percent still win this series,” Scott said. “If all of us know anything, it is that basketball — more so than baseball, more so than football — it is so strange how rare it is when momentum carries over… A team could get blown out by 35 points and the very next game they can blow out that team by 35 points.”
But it’s about this Warriors team, in particular.
Nothing is out of the question for this group.
“If anybody can do it, it’s Steph and Dray and Klay and Loon,” Scott said. “Because all the talk about championship mettle and having been there and experience, that’s true. And these guys have more of it than almost anybody except LeBron James. I still think Shaq’s right. I see this one going seven.”
That said, Scott wasn’t making any guarantees.
She believes the Warriors are at the end of this dynastic run. Will it go any further? It’s tough to say.
But Scott channeled the spirit of Hunter Pence against the Cincinnati Reds in 2012, and thinks the Warriors might have something similar brewing:
I can see this going seven. I didn’t say who might win that series. I think they are at the very end. But I think we saw the fight that Stephen Curry put up in Game 7 against those Kings.
And you guys know that they see it, too. They’re hearing all the chatter… The guys hear the talk.
It’s kinda gonna be Hunter Pence-esque of, “I want to play one more game with you guys. Do you want to play one more with me?”
That’s why I see this going seven. I don’t know who’s going to come out victorious, because I think the Dubs are at the very end of this incredible run. But I think there’s a reason folks are saying this might be the end. It could. But when it comes to baby-faced assassins, I don’t think anybody is going to fight to the death more than that guy, 30.
The series will shift back to San Francisco on Wednesday night as Golden State will make a first go at staying off their own execution.
