David Villar playing second base in game two vs. the White Sox on Wednesday was not the original plan.

Everyday second baseman Thairo Estrada was a late scratch after fouling a ball off his leg during Monday’s game. The impact caused stiffness in Estrada’s leg that would not subside pregame, according to Alex Pavlovic.

The good news is that Estrada is expected to be in the lineup on Thursday according to Gabe Kapler.

Estrada avoiding an injured list stint is crucial as second base is currently the team’s worst position from a depth standpoint. The Giants don’t have another natural second baseman on the depth chart, which is why Villar was forced into spot duty on Wednesday.
