In the second inning of what became a blowout, 12-3 Giants win over the Chicago White Sox, Anthony DeSclafani had a heated exchange with first baseman Andrew Vaughn.
In a 3-0 count, the eight-year veteran DeSclafani threw Vaughn, 25, the former third overall pick in 2019, a slider. Vaughn tapped a dribbler back towards DeSclafani and was thrown out easily at first.
The exchange was exceedingly odd. No one in the stadium seemed to know what was going on, with Duane Kuiper expressing confusion on the broadcast, especially at the fact that the White Sox had started to come out of their dugout.
After the game, DeSclafani — who threw six shutout innings, striking out four batters and allowing three hits — shed some light on the situation.
Per Susan Slusser, Vaughn uttered a not-so-nice word to DeSclafani:
It’s a funny reaction to what turned out to be a pretty intelligent pitch from DeSclafani, who made his first start since June 26 of last season.
Vaughn had clearly hoped for a 3-0 fastball, made the mistake of swinging and dribbling a slider, and expressed frustration at a self-inflicted wound. He had an otherwise decent day, hitting an RBI double later in the game for one of the White Sox’s five hits.
The Giants will stay in Chicago for another two games this week on Wednesday and Thursday before returning for their first home stand of the season, starting Friday.
