Brock Purdy’s elbow injury suffered in the NFC Championship was not a minor one.

According to multiple reports, Purdy suffered a full tear of his ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) and faces a long recovery, but the “initial hope” is that he can avoid Tommy John surgery to be ready for training camp.

The reports state that the 49ers are recommending surgery, but that Purdy will get a second opinion. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that it’s a likely six-month recovery.

The 49ers’ progression through the playoffs puts additional stress on his return. Six months from now is the start of August. Training camp started July 27 this past year.

Former 49ers quarterback Nick Mullens, now with the Minnesota Vikings, had an internal brace installed to repair his UCL injury. More details about how Purdy will address his injury are sure to follow in the coming days.
