Sean McVay is adding a familiar face to his coaching staff.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Rams are hiring former 49ers run game coordinator and just-fired Jets offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur as their OC.

That position was vacated by Liam Coen, who returned as offensive coordinator at the University of Kentucky following a series of domino-effect happenings. That position was only available because Kentucky fired its previous offensive coordinator after one season… former 49ers QB coach Rich Scangarello.

The addition of LaFleur to the Rams staff is part of a tumultuous offseason for Los Angeles. After a very brief period of will-he-won’t-he with retirement, McVay announced his return to the Rams.

But his return also came with an overhaul of the coaching staff. Offensive line coach Kevin Carberry, special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis, defensive backs coach Jonathan Cooley, assistant defensive line coach Skyler Jones and Defensive Assistant Lance Schulters were all let go.

In addition to Coen’s departure, running backs coach Ra’Shaad Samples is joining Arizona State as its wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator.

It’s a Rams staff that is set to look wildly different than it did last year, when the Rams went 5-12 following their Super Bowl victory.
