A familiar face could be roaming the outfield in Dodger Stadium at some point next season.
The Dodgers signed former Giants center fielder Steven Duggar to a minor league contract. Duggar, 29, spent the first eight years of his professional career in the Giants organization after they selected him in the sixth round of the 2015 draft.
Duggar didn’t hit enough to earn significant playing time in San Francisco last year despite a clear need for defensive improvements in the outfield and speed on the base paths. In 12 games with the Giants in 2022, Duggar hit .194 with a .509 OPS and no home runs. Duggar ranks in the 70th percentile in speed and has recorded nine career outs above average, mostly playing center field.
Duggar’s decline came a year after he played 107 games for the Giants, slashing .257/.330/.437.
The Giants traded Duggar to the Rangers for Willie Calhoun, a corner outfielder who played four games for SF. The Rangers eventually designated Duggar for assignment, and he was subsequently picked up by the Los Angeles Angels.
In 17 games for those three teams, Duggar hit .111 and struck out in 25 of his 41 plate appearances.
