All of a sudden, the 49ers have a Deebo Samuel worry.
The star receiver suffered a quad contusion against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, but returned. the concern is that he practiced in limited fashion on Wednesday, but did not participate on Thursday.
A regression in practice is always a legitimate cause for concern.
Kyle Shanahan joined Murph & Mac on Friday to chat all things 49ers and provided an update on Samuel. It wasn’t exceedingly optimistic.
“Yeah, any time you don’t practice it’s a worry,” Shanahan said. “I mean, we’re not just giving him off to give him off. He’s trying to get healthy. He’s working as hard as he can. His thigh has been bothering him. Hasn’t loosened up the way we want it to, but hopefully it’ll be better today and he’ll be good to go for Sunday.”
He was asked whether Samuel is currently viewed as being a game-time decision. He said he’ll have to show something on Friday to give himself that chance.
“So far it is,” Shanahan said. “I mean, he’s got to do something today to give him a chance for it to be a game-time decision.”
Samuel dealt with a hamstring injury going into the Saints game, and was limited in all three days of practice. He was listed as questionable but played through it and has not been listed as dealing with a hamstring injury on the injury report.
He’s missed just one game this year, in Week 8 against the Rams, when he was dealing with a hamstring injury that kept him out of practice for the entirety of the week. He returned after the bye.
