Shanahan provides injury updates as left tackle situation threadbare

The 49ers secured a crucial, 24-9 win over the Los Angeles Rams on Monday night, but they lost even more depth at left tackle.

With Trent Williams nursing a high ankle sprain for what is expected to be at least a month, Colton McKivitz stepped in. By the end of the first half, McKivitz was ruled out.

On Monday, Kyle Shanahan revealed McKivitz had sustained a sprained MCL, the same injury both Elijah Mitchell and Azeez Al-Shaair are dealing with. That gives him about a two-month return timeline and pushes Jaylon Moore to left tackle.

Shanahan said that the tackle situation would be evaluated through the week and that Daniel Brunskill could earn consideration there, though he was viewed specifically as an interior player last week. Veteran lineman Blake Hance could be a swing tackle option, too.

The other two injuries from the game were a foot/ankle injury to Arik Armstead. He was apparently dealing with an ankle injury in addition to plantar fasciitis, and only played a few snaps in the game before sitting.

Jauan Jennings also suffered an ankle sprain and is viewed as day-to-day.

On the more positive side of things, some defensive reinforcement are hoped to arrive sooner than later.

Both Jimmie Ward and Jason Verrett are expected to return to practice this week on Wednesday, which would open their three-week activation windows.

There’s also one more odd injury note. The 49ers director of team security, Mike Anderson, went down hard on Monday chasing after the fan that Bobby Wagner clobbered.

Shanahan said he didn’t think he sustained anything serious.

“I hung out with him a little bit last night and he was walking with me, so that was a good sign,” Shanahan said. “I think it was just a hamstring, which is very good. We thought watching him out there, it was a little bit more than that, but I think he got away pretty fortunate with just a hamstring pull.”
