San Francisco may have lost a cultural landmark.
Beloved Mission District sports bar Double Play sustained significant damage after catching on fire early Saturday morning. The San Francisco Firefighters Local 798 union confirmed the blaze on Twitter.
The bar has stood on the corner of Bryant and 16th Street since 1909, and is known as a shrine of local baseball memorabilia. The bar sits across from old Seals Stadium, where the San Francisco Seals played from 1931-1957.
“The Double Play has burned down,” the Double Play said in a Facebook post that included a picture of the bar’s burned exterior. “Thank you to all the customers that have shared amazing memories here and enjoyed the food. We will keep updates as we get them. We will be closed until further notice.”
