Trey Lance’s season is over before it could really get started.

The 22-year-old suffered a fractured and dislocated ankle after it was rolled up on by Bryan Mone and Cody Barton on a read-option run up the middle.

Kyle Shanahan announced after the game that it was a season-ending fracture, but no other details were provided.

One of the predominant concerns about the injury is that it could be a compound fracture, like the one Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott suffered in the fifth game of Dallas’ 2020 season. Prescott had a challenging recovery and still faces long-term mobility concerns.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero revealed Monday that the injury is not a compound fracture, like Prescott’s.

Prescott returned in 2021 and played in all but one regular season game, en route to an 11-5 record. The 49ers will hope Lance can return as swiftly and be healthy for the 2023 season.
