Trey Lance suffers right ankle injury, carted off field

The 49ers will be fearing the absolute worst for the man they hope is the future of the franchise.

Late in the first quarter, on his third run of the game — and third run up the middle — Trey Lance went down after a tackle from Cody Barton and Poona Ford and was in visible, serious pain.

San Francisco’s starting quarterback had medical staff attend to him for an extended period and could not get up under his own power. What appeared to be an air cast was placed around Lance’s right leg and he was placed on a cart and stretchered off the field.

The severity is currently unknown, but the tenor on the field and the manner in which Lance departed indicated it could be a major injury.

The 49ers reported to media that it was an ankle injury and ruled Lance out for the remainder of the game.

Lance was relieved by Jimmy Garoppolo. Third-string quarterback Brock Purdy was made inactive on Sunday.
