Home plate umpire leaves Giants-Padres game in first inning with injury

The Giants’ game on Monday night got stopped for roughly 10 minutes when home plate umpire Marvin Hudson injured himself during a first-inning play.

Hudson slipped in foul territory on a Tommy La Stella foul pop-up, which catcher Austin Nola couldn’t corral.

Giants senior director of athletic training Dave Groeschner left San Francisco’s dugout to check on Hudson, who eventually left the field.

Second-base umpire John Tumpane replaced Hudson behind the dish. Normally, three umpires official a game, stationed at each base. When play resumed, only three umpires remained.

As La Stella dug back into the batter’s box, the Giants already trailed 3-0. Juan Soto, Josh Bell and Brandon Drury — all trade deadline acquisitions for the Padres — beat Carlos Rodón for three runs in the top of the first.
