After all the snub talk, Carlos Rodón won’t participate in this year’s All-Star Game in Dodger Stadium.
Rodón, who was initially left of the National League roster, eventually replaced Brewers closer Josh Hader (family responsibilities) for his second consecutive All-Star nod. But now Rodón is being replaced by Dodgers starter Tyler Anderson.
The Giants’ starter is tied for the major league lead among pitchers in Fangraphs WAR and ranks in the top-10 in strikeouts, fielding independent pitching and home runs allowed per nine innings. He’s 8-5 on the year with a 2.66 ERA in 18 starts.
“Any time you’re named to an All-Star team and get to be a part of it, it’s always a special moment,” Rodón said on July 12.
Anderson, who has a 10-1 record and 2.96 ERA, is the fifth Dodger selected to the All-Star Game.
Joc Pederson is now, again, the lone Giants representative for the All-Star Game, and even he is dealing with neck and back pain that could limit his participation. Pederson, who has 17 home runs on the season, is starting in the outfield for the NL.
The Giants have two more games against the Brewers after Friday night’s unforgettable walkoff grand slam. They’ll then resume play against the Dodgers on July 21 in LA, with Rodón as the projected starter. Manager Gabe Kapler had said that Rodón would do whatever is best for him and the Giants, and it appears that involves prioritizing his regular season routine.
