It’s just your standard scuffle two-and-a-half hours before a baseball game.
As the Giants got ready for the first of a 10-game road trip which kicks off in Cincinnati, some trouble was a-brewing.
According to Reds beat writer Mark Sheldon, one member of the Reds and one member of the Giants had to be separated in left field.
Both teams reportedly came out to left field, as corroborated by the video above and this photo from Reds beat writer Bobby Nightengale.
Sheldon’s video shows what looks to be a coach jogging out to left field towards a crowd of players on either side. He reported that the situation was diffused “without an escalating incident.”
This story will be updated with any other relevant details.
UPDATE: According to Sheldon, the players involved were former Padres outfielder Tommy Pham and Joc Pederson.
BETTER UPDATE: According to Reds beat writer C. Trent Rosencrans… the beef was over fantasy football. And according to Giants beat writer Andrew Baggarly, Pham slapped Pederson across the face.
“According to multiple sources, the beef stems from a disagreement the two had in a fantasy football league including players from several teams.”
Pham, by the way, was slated to DH for the Reds. He was scratched from the lineup minutes before the game. It’s unclear whether the kerfuffle had anything to do with it.
None of this is a joke. Tommy Pham slapped Joc Pederson over fantasy football.
