Dillon Brooks breaks silence on Gary Payton II foul, responds to Steve Kerr

For whatever reason, Dillon Brooks hasn’t spoken to the media since he was kicked out of Game 2 for a foul on Gary Payton II that knocked the Warriors point guard out of the series.

Brooks finally broke his silence during a media session before Monday’s Game 4, ahead of his return to the court after being suspended for Game 3. Brooks sounded contrite and apologetic for the foul, saying that if he could take it back he would.

“I didn’t mean for it to injure somebody. If I were to take it back in that moment, I would, but it’s in the past and we’re on to Game 4,” Brooks said.

The Grizzlies guard was then asked about Steve Kerr’s comment that he “broke the code.” Brooks didn’t seem to agree with that assessment or understand what Kerr was getting at.

“No reaction,” Brooks said. “I don’t really even know what that means. It’s the playoffs. Every bucket, every basket, every possession, every play counts. So I did not understand what he meant by that. I tried to make a play on the ball and I was running full speed and I jumped and he adjusted.”

“It’s a fast-paced game, stuff happens. Guys jump up in the air, guys contest shots, and sometimes the way the play is you fall down and he tried to brace his fall with his arm. It’s a tough play, and like I said before I’d take it back if I could, but I can’t take it back.”

Brooks is likely to get booed mercilessly by the crowd at Chase Center every time he touches the ball on Monday, something he says he’s looking forward to.

“I like being booed, I like guys against me, it gets me going even more. Stay on the playbook, stay on focusing on the game and I already know what’s going to come so it doesn’t phase me really.”
