The Giants acquired Isan Díaz from the Miami Marlins for either a player to be named later or cash considerations, the club’s official transaction log said.

As recently as 2020, Díaz was the fifth-ranked prospect in Miami’s system and the 86th overall in MLB Pipeline. The 2014 second-round pick was one of the centerpieces of the 2018 Christian Yelich trade that sent Yelich from Miami to Milwaukee.

News of the trade was initially reported by Miami Herald reporter Jordan McPherson.

Since the Giants are experiencing issues with COVID-19, they have temporary roster flexibility. They have put it to use; the Díaz trade is the fourth minor transaction the Giants ave made in the past week. SF has been making a habit of skipping the waiver line by trading cash for players who have been designated for assignment.

They traded for, then released, Darien Núñez, a pitcher who had just undergone Tommy John. They traded cash for Mike Ford, flew him across the country and immediately activated him for Saturday’s game. They also acquired Kevin Padlo for cash.

In Díaz’s 145 MLB games, he’s played both second and third base. In those games, Díaz is batting .185. He started the 2022 season 0-for-12 in four Triple-A games.
