After undergoing an MRI, Giants outfielder Joc Pederson has been diagnosed with a Grade 1 abductor strain, president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi told reporters Friday afternoon.

Pederson left Wednesday’s game against the Oakland Athletics in the third inning after trying to break up a double play by sliding into second base.

After that game, Pederson said he took a bad step and felt a bit of tightness in his groin.

San Francisco’s roster is currently in flux due to a wave of positive COVID-19 cases, so lots of roster moves are expected ahead of Friday’s series-opener against the Nationals. Zaidi said it’s unlikely Pederson will be sent to the injured list immediately.

“We’re not anticipating IL-ing him today,” Zaidi said. “Just wanting to give him another day or two to see if things improve and see if this is a day-to-day situation or an IL.”

If the MRI revealed a more serious injury, the Giants would have sent Pederson to the IL. An injured list stint is still possible, Zaidi said.

The abductor strain is the same injury as Alex Cobb, who is nearing a return from the 10-day IL. Cobb, LaMonte Wade Jr. (knee), Evan Longoria (finger), Tommy La Stella (Achilles) and Anthony DeSclafani are already on the injured list.

Zack Littell and Mike Yastrzemski both have COVID as well; they’re both vaccinated and boosted. More positive cases are expected to be reported.

Pederson has six home runs on the season, second-most in the National League. He’s hitting .377 with a 1.132 OPS.
