Outfielder Mike Yastrzemski tested positive for COVID-19 during the Giants’ road trip in Washington D.C., manager Gabe Kapler told reporters before the team’s series finale with the Nationals.
Yastrzemski now must quarantine for five days, but can be cleared with a negative test on the fourth or fifth day according to The Athletic’s Andy Baggarly. San Francisco wasn’t able to get a player to Nationals Park in time for Sunday’s game, so the club will play with a 27-man roster.
The 31-year-old outfielder is the first Giant to hit the COVID list this year.
COVID protocols have been loosened for the 2022 season. Players are no longer required to wear contact-tracing devices and testing is only for those who show symptoms. There is still contact tracing, however, so additional players could join Yastrzemski on the COVID list.
Yastrzemski was just starting to find his rhythm at the plate, going 7-for-15 with a home run in the past four games. The Giants will likely replace him for their one-game stop in Milwaukee Monday, potentially with outfielder Heliot Ramos.
