Frank Gore is returning to San Francisco before officially calling it quits.
The greatest running back in 49ers history is planning on signing a one-day contract with the team that drafted him before he retires. Gore hopes to do this in the next couple of months.
“We’re still trying to figure out when I’m going to do my one-day contract. To sign, do my retirement,” Gore said on the SFNiners YouTube channel.
Gore also said he would like to remain with the organization in a front office role.
“I love looking at talent. I love evaluating talent and I love ball,” Gore said. “And they [the 49ers] know that I know football players, what it’s supposed to take to be a football player.”
The 49ers drafted Gore out of the University of Miami in the third round of the 2005 draft. He played 10 seasons in San Francisco where he was selected to five Pro Bowls, rushed for 1,000 yards eight times and set the record for rushing yards in franchise history with 11,073. Gore also holds 49ers franchise records for rushing yards in a game (212), rushing yards in a season (1,695) and scrimmage yards in a season (2,180).
Gore was named to the NFL’s 2010 All-Decade Team and finished his career with 16,000 rushing yards, the third most in NFL history behind Hall of Famers Emmitt Smith and Walter Payton. After his tenure with the 49ers, Gore had stops in Indianapolis, Miami, Buffalo and with the Jets from 2015-2020.
