Dodgers add to stacked roster with trade for former saves leader

The Dodgers already have assembled one of the scariest lineups ever, and now they’re fortifying their bullpen by trading for eight-time All-Star Craig Kimbrel.

According to multiple reports, LA is sending outfielder A.J. Pollock to the Chicago White Sox for Kimbrel. The righty recorded 24 total saves in 2021, but struggled in a setup role for the White Sox. He’s expected to slide back into a traditional closing role for the Giants’ rivals.

MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand was the first to report the trade.

It’s been quite a busy offseason for the Dodgers. They lost shortstop Corey Seager, longtime closer Kenley Jansen and mercenary ace Max Scherzer. But they also added former National League MVP Freddie Freeman and now filled Jansen’s place with Kimbrel.

Kimbrel, one of the best closers of his generation, led the league in saves every year from 2011 to 2014. He played for both the White Sox and Cubs in 2021, registering a 2.26 ERA despite scuffling down the stretch. The reliever was available in a trade because the White Sox already have closer Liam Hendriks on their roster.

Los Angeles’ bullpen now includes Kimbrel, Blake Treinen, Brusdar Graterol, Alex Vesia and Daniel Hudson. Although their rotation — particularly given the uncertainty surrounding Trevor Bauer — could be top-heavy, the bullpen should be able to preserve leads.

Pollock, meanwhile, was a valuable role player for the Dodgers, but played a position of depth. Chris Taylor, Mookie Betts, Gavin Lux and Cody Bellinger each roam the outfield.

The Dodgers remain the betting favorite, and projection models’ pick, to win the NL West. This trade will only boost their odds to return to the top of the division after the Giants dethroned them last year.

The Giants don’t see the Dodgers until June, when they host LA for a three-game weekend series starting June 10.
