An old friend is heading back to the Bay.
The 49ers have reportedly re-signed defensive end Kerry Hyder to a one-year deal worth $1.5 million according to Field Yates of ESPN.
As mentioned in the above tweet, Hyder had a breakout campaign with the 49ers in 2020, leading the team in sacks (8.5) with Nick Bosa and Dee Ford both out due to injury. The performance earned Hyder a three-year, $16.5 million contract with the Seahawks last offseason.
Unfortunately for Hyder, not all of that was guaranteed, and the DE was cut after earning just $3.65 million last year. Seattle wasn’t interested in retaining his services after he notched just 1.5 sacks in 14 games.
Hopefully Hyder can rediscover his 2020 success while being reunited with defensive line coach Kris Kocurek. Kocurek is considered one of the best d-line coaches in the league, and has consistently got the best out of his personnel.
Especially if Arden Key exits in free agency, Hyder will compete for a starting defensive end role alongside Nick Bosa. Hyder joins a d-line with Bosa, Samson Ebukam, Arik Armstead, Javon Kinlaw, Kevin Givens, Charles Omenihu, Maurice Hurst, Jordan Willis and newly signed free agent Hassan Ridgeway.
