The Denver Broncos added Russell Wilson earlier this month, and they’re apparently not done fortifying their roster around him.

Denver is “closing in” on signing former 49ers cornerback K’Waun Williams to a two-year, $7 million contract, according to Pro Football Network’s Mike Kaye. Williams played 14 regular season games for San Francisco in 2021 and came up with two interceptions, including one in the Wild Card round against Dallas.

Williams had been with the 49ers since 2017 after playing his first two seasons in Cleveland. In 65 games with SF, the slot corner recorded four interceptions, eight forced fumbles, five sacks and 174 solo tackles. He earned a 63.3 PFF grade for his performance last season.

Despite not having the best season of his career, Williams is getting a pay raise from Denver (he made $2.4 million in 2021). The Broncos’ secondary now includes Williams, young star Patrick Surtain, Ronald Darby, Kareem Jackson and Justin Simmons.

San Francisco’s defensive backfield was one of its weaknesses last year, but the team did sign former Chiefs DB Charvarius Ward to a $42 million deal. The Niners are also set to return young corners Ambry Thomas and Emmanuel Moseley.

Still, depth is key, and losing Williams will hurt.
