SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Giants announced that they have signed left-handed pitcher Matthew Boyd to a one-year Major League contract for the 2022 season worth $5.2 million. Boyd can make an additional $2.3 million in performance bonuses for games started as a pitcher at the Major League level: $400,000 each for 12, 14 and 16 starts; $500,000 for 18 starts; $600,000 for 20 starts.

Boyd posted a 3-8 record with a 3.89 ERA (34er, 78.2ip) in 15 starts for the Detroit Tigers last season. He carried a 3.44 ERA through early June before landing on the Injured List two separate times and undergoing season-ending surgery to repair a torn flexor tendon last September.

Boyd established career highs in several categories just three seasons ago in 2019, including games started (32), innings pitched (185.1) and strikeouts (238), while he tied a career high in victories (nine). He set a Tigers franchise record with 11.56 strikeouts per nine innings, which also ranked fourth in the American League and sixth in the Majors.

Originally drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the sixth round of the 2013 draft, Boyd is 37-62 with a 4.96 ERA in 149 games (145 starts) with the Blue Jays (2015) and Tigers (2015-2021).

In a corresponding move, the Giants designated outfielder Austin Dean for assignment.
