The 49ers made their big move on defense Monday night with the signing of cornerback Charvarius Ward. On Tuesday, they added some depth.
San Francisco signed linebacker and special teamer Oren Burks, the player announced on Twitter.
Burks, 26, was a third-round pick by the Packers out of Vanderbilt in 2018. He appeared in 63 games over the past four years for Green Bay as an LB and special teamer, and amassed 92 tackles, half a sack and a fumble recovery.
The 49ers special teams unit ranked in the bottom third of the NFL, leading to the exit of special teams coordinator Richard Hightower. Burks joins a linebacker group of Fred Warner, Azeez Al-Shaair, Dre Greenlaw, Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles and Curtis Robinson. Marcell Harris is a free agent.
