You can’t be upset with Kyle Shanahan for failing to reveal who his starting quarterback is when he said earlier this week that he wouldn’t reveal who his starting quarterback is.
The only difference is that on Friday, Shanahan said he knew who his starting quarterback would be.
“I know what we’re doing,” Shanahan said. “I just don’t feel like telling you right now.”
He mentioned that Jimmy Garoppolo had a “good week” of practice and that he feels “good with where he’s at right now.” Shanahan also said that Trey Lance was a little bit better in practice this week than he was last week.
This has nothing to do with being pesky to his old friend Sean McVay, just his defensive coordinator, Raheem Morris.
“Just making Raheem [Morris] a little more uncomfortable, not that Raheem ever gets uncomfortable,” Shanahan said. “Just not worth saying. No real point in it except to avoid more of these press conferences which, this is my last one, so I feel I can tough this one out.”
The quarterback situation isn’t the only one muddied. San Francisco has six players listed as questionable for Sunday, in addition to the four active players still on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. Corner Ambry Thomas was activated from the list on Friday, with tight end Tanner Hudson being waived in a corresponding move.
Shanahan said the remaining five players on the COVID list have a chance to be activated tomorrow. Deommodore Lenoir would have to test out of the protocols as opposed to clearing the CDC’s five-day window because he was placed on the list on Wednesday.
Below is the game status report. All the following players have been listed as questionable:
- Azeez Al-Shaair (knee) – Shanahan would be “very impressed” if he plays Sunday, would “still be tough” for him to play, but has a legitimate chance to play
- QB Jimmy Garoppolo (right thumb)
- LB Dre Greenlaw (groin) – Shanahan feels “good about him being ready this week”
- LB Marcell Harris (Achilles)
- DL Maurice Hurst (calf)
- S Jaquiski Tartt (shoulder)
- T Trent Williams (elbow)
Running back Elijah Mitchell (knee) and safety Talanoa Hufanga (knee) are both good to go, having been unlisted from the game status report after dealing with limitations in practice this week.
