The 49ers are taking a chance on a player that could have some upside.
San Francisco is signing former Panthers receiver Devin Funchess to their practice squad according to Tom Pelissero and confirmed by Funchess on Twitter.
Funchess was once thought to be a Pro Bowl caliber receiver for the Carolina Panthers, catching 63 passes for 840 yards in 2017, his third season in the NFL. Funchess’ production steeply feel off after that, catching 44 passes for 549 yards the next season in Carolina before hitting free agency and signing with the Colts in 2019. Funchess appeared in just one game for Indianapolis and caught three passes.
Funchess is a big receiver at 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds and was a frequent touchdown target for Cam Newton during his days in Carolina. Though his career has hit a speed bump, Funchess is only 27 years old, seven-years removed from being selected in the second-round out of Michigan.
