Is this finally the offseason that Farhan Zaidi and Scott Harris make a somewhat splashy free agent signing?
They’re considering it if you believe the latest report from MLB newsbreaker Jon Morosi, who says the Giants and Marlins are two teams showing interest in former Reds All-Star Nick Castellanos.
Castellanos is coming off a career-year in Cincinnati, a primary reason he exercised the opt out clause in his contract to become a free agent. Castellanos slashed 309/.362/.576 with 34 home runs and won a Silver Slugger award in 2021, earning his first All-Star appearance. Castellanos played right field for the Reds, but began is career as a third basemen for the Detroit Tigers.
The Giants’ brass is familiar with Castellanos. General manager Scott Harris was part of the group that traded for him when he was a member of the Chicago Cubs in 2019.
According to Spotrac, Castellanos is likely to command an offer that pays him $21.3 million annually. That would be the highest annual figure on the Giants roster as currently constructed.
