Camilo Doval isn’t just turning heads locally.
The Giants rookie has been named the National League’s Reliever of the Month by Major League Baseball, after a mind boggling stretch where he didn’t allow a single run in 15 September appearances. During that stretch, Doval allowed just seven hits and three walks in 14 1/3 innings, while striking out 20.
Doval, 24, made his major league debut back in April, and went back and fourth between the big league club and Triple-A Sacramento four times before closer Jake McGee’s injury. McGee, who was having a solid season in his own right, was recently activated, but Doval has been so electric it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him keep the ninth inning job for the postseason.
Opponents hit just .143/.192/.163 vs. Doval during his September stretch.
Doval was originally signed in 2015 out of the Dominican Republic and was ranked as the team’s 24th best prospect in 2020.
