PHOENIX — Luis Basabe is the unfortunate victim of the first scare of the Giants’ Cactus League season.
In Tuesday’s eighth inning at American Family Fields of Phoenix, former Giant Zach Green smacked a well-hit drive to right that Basabe full-body dove for, doing well to get to the ball but it bounced out of glove, while Basabe stayed down. He was in clear pain, and both a trainer and Gabe Kapler ran to right field to check on him.
Basabe walked off the field slowly while holding his right arm.
“He was in some pain but managing it,” Kapler, who did not have an update before Basabe was examined, said over Zoom after the 13-7 loss to the Brewers.
Basabe debuted in the majors last year after the Giants sent cash to the White Sox in a midseason trade. The former top prospect appeared in nine games last season, some as a defensive replacement.
The Giants like the tools he brings. The 24-year-old is quick and has shown good plate discipline.
In the aftermath of the injury, Logan Wyatt, who had only played first base in the Giants’ system, moved to left; Patrick Bailey, a catcher, came off the bench to play first; and outfielder Hunter Bishop moved from left to right.
