When Steve Young heaps praise on a quarterback, it carries weight. Even more so when the quarterback in question is being buzzed about as a potential replacement for Jimmy Garoppolo.
That’s exactly what the Hall of Famer did when speaking about Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford when he joined Tolbert, Krueger & Brooks on Wednesday. Stafford has been the subject of various takes throughout the last two weeks, with many in the industry believing he’s the ideal replacement for Garoppolo, should the 49ers decide to move on this offseason.
Young wouldn’t go as far as saying he’d be a good replacement for Jimmy G. He probably wants to stay away from that particular conversation. He did say, however, that from a talent perspective, Stafford is one of the best QBs of his generation.
“I’m telling you, Matthew Stafford is a tremendous football player,” Young said on KNBR. “Matthew Stafford, with some help, is one of the greats of this generation. He really is. He’s done miracles, in my mind. Miracles. And that’s the thing. If you can say, ‘Who’s the most valuable player? The guy who’s dragging around the most, and getting the most out of it.’ I might say, ‘Matthew Stafford.’
“… When you think about Matthew Stafford, you think he’s pretty good, right? I can’t imagine how good he’d really be if he had some help.”
Perhaps 49ers fans will find out come 2021.
