There was some question as to whether new Warriors acquisition Kelly Oubre would be a starter or come off the bench for Golden State this season, considering he’s filled both roles in the past with Phoenix and Washington.
That’s no longer a question after Steve Kerr spoke to reporters on Tuesday in the first official media session of training camp. Kerr says four starters are locked in heading into the 2020-21 season: Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, Andrew Wiggins and Oubre.
“Probably four,” Kerr said of how many players he knows will start immediately. “It would be hard for me to not see Kelly and Andrew starting on the wings. Obviously Steph and Draymond will be starting.
“I suppose there’s a chance as we get a glimpse of everything that we might decide we need to change the rotation, change the starting group. That’s always a possibility, but my mindset going into this season is that those four guys would be in our starting group, and then we’ll see with the center spot.”
How the center spot shakes out to start the season will be interesting, considering the Warriors just drafted their center of the future, James Wiseman, with the No. 2 overall pick. Aside from Wiseman there is Marquese Chriss, who was probably the team’s most productive center last season, but is limited. Kevon Looney is a better overall player when healthy, but it remains to be seen how ready he is to play big minutes after appearing in just 20 games due to nerve damage and a core muscle injury that required surgery in 2020.
