The 49ers are playing the Packers on Thursday. At least for now.

Green Bay running back A.J. Dillon tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday morning according to The NFL Network, which at the very least will create competitive implications for the Packers. Contract tracing is currently underway, and there isn’t any talk of moving Thursday’s game at this time.

This is the first COVID scare of the season for the Packers, who are coming off a disappointing 28-22 home loss to the lowly Vikings. Dillon played 17 snaps in that game, and has been ruled out for Thursday. So far this season, there hasn’t been any evidence of on field transmission in an NFL game, but the Packers are concerned about his offensive teammates according to Adam Schefter.

Dillon being ruled out leaves Jamaal Williams as the lone reliable running back for the Packers as Aaron Jones tries to work back from a calf injury.

The NFL has rescheduled 14 games already this season due to COVID outbreaks, so it wouldn’t be out of the question that 49ers-Packers could be pushed to Sunday, Monday or later should more members of the Packers test positive in the coming days.
