For as high profile a player as Richard Sherman is, his absence since Week 2 has not been oft discussed. That’s likely due to the swarm of other injuries the 49ers have since faced and the fact that their depleted cornerback corps has performed well in that time.
Sherman is now eligible to be removed from injured reserve, but doesn’t seem quite there. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said the team was hoping to get him back to practice this week, but does not expect him back for Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins. Once Sherman returns to practice, he has 21 days to be promoted back to the active roster, or revert to injured reserve for the remainder of the season.
On Sherman’s podcast with Chris Collinsworth, the NBC commentator, who returns to Santa Clara in two weeks when the 49ers face the Los Angeles Rams, asked when he’d return.
“We’re trying to get that figured out right now,” Sherman said. “I’m trying to make it back for that [Rams] game. The plan was for me to practice this week. We’re still working through that. This rehab process, they are way more meticulous than back in the day when they tell you to tape it up and just get back out there and give you a Toradol and let you go. So they’re concerned with the long term, making sure I’m able to play the whole season, so we’ll see. I’m fighting to get out there when you’re here wearing your mask and make sure drink with it and eat with it on and don’t remove.”
