Alex Smith wasn’t supposed to play football again. In fact, he’s lucky to be alive.
Smith, 36, incredibly, was cleared for football activity this week, after breaking both his right tibia and fibula in a November 2018 game against Houston. What followed was 17 surgeries and complications caused by an infection that nearly led to Smith’s leg being amputated and put his life in jeopardy.
Upon hearing the news that doctors had cleared him, Smith’s wife and children celebrated by surprising the quarterback and spraying him with champagne. One of Smith’s former teammates with the 49ers, the beloved Frank Gore, took to Twitter to share in the excitement.
This makes me real happy!!! #11BacktoWork?? @NFL https://t.co/9faYqOFZaV
