Just call San Francisco North Carolina State West.
With the 67th pick, the Giants took yet another member of the Wolfpack, selecting lefty Nick Swiney, the battery mate of their first-round selection, catcher Patrick Bailey. The first call Bailey received when he was selected? Will Wilson, the former NC State shortstop the Giants contemplated drafting a year prior, only to then acquire in a December trade.
The Giants lost Madison Bumgarner this offseason and with the pick they gained in compensation, they took another southpaw from Bumgarner’s state.
With the very next selection, compensation for Will Smith signing with Atlanta this offseason, Farhan Zaidi & Co. took shortstop Jimmy Glowenke from Dallas Baptist. Thus far, the Giants have made four selections and each has been a college product.
Swiney, a junior, comes with reports of a low-90s fastball and above-average changeup that has led to impressive strikeout numbers (95 in 56 2/3 innings his sophomore season). He converted to a full-time starter in this brief season, posting a 1.29 ERA in four starts.
Glowenke, listed at 5-foot-11, 190 pounds, is reported to have some untapped power and very solid glove, though may not have the speed to stick at shortstop in the majors. He started this season on fire, slashing .415/.458/.509 in the 13 games Dallas Baptist squeezed in.
They’ll add to the Giants’ draft haul that also featured second-rounder Casey Schmitt. Still to come: picks 85, 114 and 144.
