Well, we know Farhan Zaidi craves flexibility.
The Giants opened their Day Two of the MLB draft by selecting a threat both with the bat and on the mound. With the 49th-overall pick, the Giants selected Casey Schmitt out of San Diego State, who was announced as a third baseman but also served as the Aztecs closer.
Schmitt, a righty hitter and pitcher, took off at the plate following a middling freshman season, in total slashing .295/.366/.408 in his two-and-a-pandemic seasons in the Mountain West. On the mound, he put up a 2.48 ERA with 78 strikeouts in 87 innings, finishing his career (presuming he signs) with 23 saves.
The Giants did not take a pitcher last year until the eighth round and signaled Wednesday that they would likely take a mix of hitters and pitchers this time around. Maybe they meant they wanted each pick to be a mix of a hitter and pitcher.
Still up for the Giants on Thursday: picks 67, 68, 85, 114 and 144.
